If your characters are not driven, your writing will be boring to your reader.
Note that I said, “reader,” not “readers.” The only reader will be you!
Nobody wants to read a "ho hum" novel or short story. We study Poe first then Gary Jennings, author of Aztec and other historical novels. I also point out motivation in characters in my western and detective novels.
